The big question coming into tonight for Wellston (3-4, 1-2) was how would they be able to stop the three-headed monster attack of Nelsonville-York’s Alex Mount, Hunter Edwards and Noah Andrews? Well, that question will go unanswered as Nelsonville-York (5-2, 3-0) was able continue its dominance with a 38-0 win over the Golden Rockets.

The Buckeyes got off to a slow start in the first quarter after producing no points on three drives, while the Rockets had trouble too, with two drives with nothing going.

It wasn’t until the second quarter when the Buckeyes three-headed monster came alive, with a 29-yard run by quarterback Hunter Edwards and a 35-yard run by tailback Alex Mount. However, the Golden Rocket defense held them to a 25-yard field goal by Garrett Maiden, which put N-Y on the board first to make it 3-0.

The Golden Rocket offense looked to get something going with the combined attack of quarterback Michael Graham and tailback Nick Cox as they looked to be driving down the field to answer Nelsonville-York’s field goal. However, the Buckeye defense came up big with an interception by Garrett O’Nail, which put the Buckeye’s in good field position at the Wellston 44-yard line.

Two plays later, N-Y took advantage of the interception by Garrett O’Nail with a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Hunter Edwards to his receiver Chris Cook to increase the Buckeye’s lead to 10-0

Looking to score before halftime, Wellston drove down the field only to have the ball sail over the head of Wellston quarterback Michael Graham for a loss of 26 yards. This forced Wellston to punt, giving Nelsonville-York a chance to score before halftime.

Starting from their own 47-yard line, N-Y’s Alex Mount would take the ball 23 yards to the Wellston 30 yard line. This set up Hunter Edwards incredible run, as he dropped back to pass, only to take it himself for a 30-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 17-0 with just 36 seconds before halftime.

The Buckeyes continued their dominance in the second half with 3 more touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came from tailback Alex Mount, who would run those in. The third touchdown came on defense, with defensive back Jonathan Richards returning an interception for the touchdown. These 3 touchdowns in the second half helped give NY enough to ensure their victory at C.H. Jones field.

The Wellston defense was good enough to hold off the three-headed monster of NY for the first quarter. However, the Golden Rocket defense was unable to continue their success for the next three quarters, as tailback Alex Mount finished with 2 touchdowns 265 yards rushing on 15 carries and 2 touchdowns. Those 265 yards helped Alex Mount pass 1,000 yards rushing on the season for the Buckeyes. For quarterback Hunter Edwards, he was able to prove too much for the Golden Rocket defense as well, finishing with 63 yards on 7 carries and a touchdown, and going 2 for 6 passing for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Wellston will look to recover from losing two straight next week when they travel to Athens to take on the Bulldogs. The Buckeyes will look to continue their dominance when they return home to take on the Alexander Spartans.
