Every weekend local music geeks unite to provide the region with 11 hours of creatively curated tunes on WOUB 1340AM, an endeavor that is known commonly as Radio Free Athens! Typically the program runs from 9 a.m. EST to 8 p.m. EST every Saturday, and can also be heard through this link.

Here is a list of the DJs slated to play on Saturday, August 25:

9 a.m. to 12 p.m. – DJ Grumpy Grandma
12 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Art Cromwell
3 p.m. to 6 p.m. – R@T
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Michael T

Below, find a preview of some of the groovy tunes that will be flowing through the airwaves this Saturday from a couple of our volunteer DJs. Make sure to stop by woub.org/culture on Tuesday (after the holiday weekend) for a curated playlist based on the set lists DJs were playing this past weekend!

From DJ Grumpy Grandma, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST

Your Grumpy Grandma, waking you up (or maybe putting you to sleep, for your mischievous kiddos who mighta not fallen asleep yet by 9 a.m. Saturday…) with her records has fallen victim to a little bit of “John Moreland fever.” If you don’t know who he is, well, this Grumpy Grandma writes you a prescription for listening to his new album Big Bad Luv, or, maybe if you’re feeling morose, 2013’s In The Throes. This development in my health has been pretty sudden, so I don’t have any of his records (right now, they’re on their way, but whether they’ll be here by Saturday is another story,) but if we’ve got any his stuff in our online radio catalog you know what I’ll be playing.

In fact, I’ll be honest and confess that I just interviewed Moreland earlier this week, in advance of his appearance at Stuart’s Opera House in a few weeks — and I haven’t been so nervous for an interview in a long time. He called a little bit late, which was a relief for me, really, thinking for a moment that perhaps I wouldn’t even have to talk to this musician who I admire largely. But call he did and my heart it did jump!

I’ll also be training Natalie Colarossi! She’ll be playing at least the final hour of my show, and I’m looking forward to it.

From Art Cromwell, 12 p.m. EST to 3 p.m. EST

From R@T, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. EST

I have no really plans for this weekend’s show. Sometimes it makes for some of the best shows. If you have a request, let me know! The kids are back in town and it is sportsball season so that might influence things.

From Michael T., 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EST

For 2 hours beginning at 6 p.m. (11 p.m. UTC), Radio Free Athens presents brand new music from NYC bands Gamblers, BODEGA and Braindance, modern rock and pop from the likes of Caroline Rose, Water Witches, St. Vincent, Shilpa Ray, Angela Perley, Megan Wren and more, all linked via their antecedents from the sixties to the aughts.

If relentless overdriven fuzz and screaming angry macho posturing is your thing, you may want to tune elsewhere.
