Athens keeps it close against Fairfield Union; falls to the 2-seed
< < Back to athens-keeps-it-close-against-fairfield-union-falls-to-the-2-seedLANCASTER, Ohio (WOUB) — The Athen’s Lady Bulldogs season came to an end Monday night in their second tournament game against the Fairfield Union Falcons. The Falcons, ranked No. 2 in the tournament, took the game 45-37.
The Bulldogs fought their way down to the final minute. The first quarter score ended with the Falcons up by only one. The pace picked up a little bit by halftime, but the Falcons were still only up by eight.
Coming out of the half the Falcons came alive, building up quite the lead. The Bulldogs did not back down. Under a minute left in the game, Bulldogs down by only six, with the ball in their hands. A turnover ends the drive and essentially the season for Athens.
The downfall of the team was turnovers. As a whole, the team committed 22.
Haylie Mills and Asa Holcomb both chipped in with 12 points. Mills also pulled away with seven rebounds.
Head Coach Phil Koska says he is incredibly proud of everything his senior class has done.
This was the final game for seniors Bailey Davis, Harper Bennett, Annika Benton, Pam Alier, Haylie Mills, Kesi Federspiel and Kianna Benton.
The team only has two returners for the next season as they begin the rebuild process.
