Nelsonville-York survives upset scare against traveling Loudonville
< < Back to nelsonville-york-survives-upset-scare-against-traveling-loudonvilleBUCHTEL, Ohio (WOUB) — Friday night’s playoff matchup between the Loudonville Redbirds and the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes was one that went down the wire, with the Buckeyes defeating the Redbirds 14-7.
Matthew Sprang got things started for the Redbirds rushing in for a three-yard touchdown. A completed extra-point would give the Redbirds a 7-0 lead.
The Buckeyes responded with a touchdown of their own the next drive. Quarterback Micah Williams connected with Leighton Loge from 16 yards out for the touchdown to even the score at 7-7.
The Redbirds would intercept the Buckeyes twice in the second quarter, but make nothing of it. The score at half remained tied at seven.
Nelsonville-York had some momentum to start out the second half, but lost it all in one play. Running Back Gavin Richards coughed up the ball at the one-yard line to give Loudonville the ball back.
Entering the fourth quarter the score was still tied at seven. The Buckeyes led another impressive drive down the field and went to settle for a field goal that was blocked by the Redbirds.
A Loudonville turnover on downs put the ball back in the Buckeyes hands. Micah Williams helped lead the offense 63 yards down the field.
With six seconds left, Gavin Richards rushed in from one yard out for the game winning touchdown.
The Buckeyes look to keep this momentum as they face the winner of Bellaire and Worthington Christian.
