ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – Ohio secured a 2-0 victory on Saturday night for a series sweep against Iowa State at Bird Arena.

Both teams started off slow. This was until Jack Glen found the back of the net for a power play goal for the Bobcats with a little under 10 minutes remaining in the period.

“Jack Glen is really hitting his peak right now and is gonna be a big piece moving forward,” head coach Lionel Mauron said. “We’re happy that his role has grown, he’s playing really well.”

Ohio continued to play strong defense to hold Iowa State scoreless throughout the first period. Despite different opportunities throughout the second period, neither team found the back of the net.

The Cyclones tried to find the back of the net in the third period, but were shut down by the Bobcats defense. A key piece was goalie Scott Bird who was a wall in the net. Bird faced 36 shots on goal and earned a shutout.

“It’s a lot of words to describe,” Bird said. “I haven’t played in probably almost three months so it means a lot to come back and come back in a big way.”

Mauron talks about the impact Bird had in the net for the Bobcats.

“I’m really happy for him because he hasn’t played in a long time,” Mauron said. “We have a competition in net between four guys that are all very good and he got his chance and took it. You could tell it meant a lot to him and very proud of the way he performed.”

Aiden Grieco scored with 1:21 remaining in the game to put Ohio up 2-0 as it later earned a series sweep. Mauron talks about his takeaways from the series as a whole.

“At this time of the year there are no easy games and we just need to find ways to win,” Mauron said. “It doesn’t really matter how and I think that we have a group that does that. So the big takeaway is it wasn’t pretty, we didn’t play great, but we found a way to win.”

Ohio will return to Bird Arena on Feb. 9 against Liberty.
